History Happy Hour: St. Patty's Day Edition

by

Museum Center

@

5:30-7:00pm

History Happy Hour is back! Join Siema Swartzel, the music teacher at Arnold Elementary as she shares her stories of Irish music, Appalachia, and her travels to Ireland.

Swartzel has introduced traditional Irish music to her students in her class, and is from Southwest Virginia, as the daughter of a coal miner. Growing up in this region populated largely by European immigrants, Swartzel was surrounded by Appalachian music, including bluegrass. Always fascinated with her ancestral roots, she traveled to Ireland through a grant where she trained with musicians and brought these lessons back to Arnold Elementary.

Swartzel will be speaking about her own experiences and about the similarities between Celtic and Appalachian music.

Appetizers and Open Bar included with your ticket purchase.  Tickets are FREE for sponsor level members and above, $15 for other members, and $25 for non-members.

Raucous Mississippi rock combo The Weeks got their start in 2006 while all four members were still in high school. Staffed by twin brothers Cyle (lead vocals) and Cain Barnes (drums), Samuel Williams (guitar, vocals), and Damien Bone (bass). They released their debut album, Cadillac Comeback, in 2008. Their swaggering, sludgy, and slightly southern indie rock was further expanded with the release of six total albums including five studio albums and one live project.
